December is the perfect time to indulge yourself in the luxury. Whether you book a long weekend or a few days mid-week, think of it as a time of restoration and preparation for the coming year. Now is an opportunity to recalibrate with 2023 just around the corner.

Choosing to take a break from our routines is important. In business, this kind of getaway is considered simply a strategic planning retreat and a routine part of business. Our personal lives also deserve this kind of attention. Is 2022 the year that starts a new tradition and sets in place an annual personal retreat?

A weekend away in a place nearby

One of my favorite places to head for the luxury of a long weekend away is The Commodore Perry in Austin. There are really lovely hotels here in Dallas and I’ve stay-cationed in many of them, but there is something about going to a nearby big city that makes it feel like regular life has been set aside. To my mind, the minute I’m outside Dallas city limits I am officially on vacation.

After putting in the miles on Interstate 35, driving through the gates of this gem of a property brings you into a surprising and wonderful world. Opening just back in the Summer of 2020, there is an old soul feel to this estate as if it is still a private home and you are arriving for a weekend visit. The staff and the warmth of the place quickly wraps one in its luxurious comfort.

There are many reasons to stay at the Commodore Perry,

but my favorite is the beautiful way they’ve combined European elegance with Texas hospitality. Located just off Red River Road, it comprises 10 acres in the heart of Austin, but has only 54 rooms. Sitting on the patio or by the pool makes it is easy to forget one is in Texas and equally effortless to conjure up Tuscany. This is “Old World meets Texas” and the complete vibe is brilliant. This is a relaxed, beautifully appointed luxury estate that’s glad you arrived.

Over the past two years, the team at the Commodore Perry have continued to not only provide an exceptional stay but have also curated guest experiences that are true unique standouts for the industry. Certainly, there are the more typical offerings like seasonally inspired Sunday picnics, Austin hikes, mystic readings, wellness classes and weekend vinyl happy hours. But they do throw in exclusive seasonal offerings are singular and unique. Taking part means paying close attention to their calendar or having someone who keeps you in the loop.

In early November, for their “Taste of Auberge”, the team from San Francisco’s two Michelin-starred Saison arrived. They led a fire cooking workshop and cooked an intimate coursed dinner. Looking to partner with Austin artists, the annual holiday lighting will be every Friday of December. The lighting will feature exclusive artwork by Austin artists Anderson+Kincaid alongside local live music and signature mansion food and drinks.

Speaking of drinks, I would be remiss to not mention dining.

A part of any vacation is always the food and here this property just does not miss. Whether breakfast in the Breakfast Nook, lunch under the Loggia, or service at the bar, there isn’t a bad bite or drink to be found.

Due to timing, I as unable to dine at Lutie’s, their farm-to-table restaurant that re-creates its menu to match the season. I won’t make this mistake on my next visit. I’ve read the reviews. The distinguished husband and wife team are preparing beautifully balanced and inspired plates which I can’t wait to try. For the food and wine minded, this is just another reason to visit this exceptional property.

If you’re looking for me this winter, don’t be surprised to find me headed south towards this well-appointed Austin property where the suites, food and atmosphere lull one into a relaxed and refreshed place.
